Adobe updates Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge

November 16th, 2007

If you didn’t notice, or you have your Adobe CS3 apps set to NOT check for updates automatically, Adobe has updated Photoshop to 10.0.1. The update brings the following:

  • The speed of moving objects contained within multiple layer sets has been improved.
  • Converting images to CMYK using certain profiles no longer results in black files.
  • The Save for Web feature now includes an option to “Include XMP” (metadata) in the settings menu within the main Save for Web interface, making the existing capability easier to access.
  • When using Save For Web with “Include XMP” enabled, all ...

Leopard: What’s working and what’s not on my MacPro

October 29th, 2007

Upon confirming that my vital applications (Web browsers, Mail, Adobe CS3 and Transmit) work perfectly fine under Apple’s latest version of OSX (Leopard), I quickly moved on to see what other applications on my MacPro were working, working with problems or flat-out busted. My findings were pleasantly surprising.

What’s Working:

  • 1Password - required an update, but works perfectly now
  • Comic Life - Works fine, and still just as much fun as it always was
  • Domainer - Working fine
  • ecto - The best app for managing your blog posts is working perfectly. At least, the ...

Leopard ready for designers and photographers

October 29th, 2007

Having spent my weekend with Leopard and Adobe CS3, I can put your mind at ease by saying that if you were waiting to upgrade, you don’t have to.Leopard and Adobe’s Creative Suite applications appear to work perfectly together. In fact, they work even better than they did with Tiger. Speed is the only thing I noticed after the upgrade. A lot more of it. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, Distiller and Dreamweaver all launched much faster than they did under Tiger.

As for Creative Suite 2 users, with the exception of a ...

Free Proper Fractions for InDesign CS3

October 3rd, 2007

Back in March, I wrote an article for Macworld.com about a simple method for getting fractions that look better than the defaults you typically get out of InDesign when using Superscript and Subscript settings. The results weren’t perfect, but I could live with them.

proper-fraction-id.gifBut you don’t have to settle for “good enough” anymore. Dan Rodney is offering a free downloadable script that automatically changes all your manually typed fractions into near-perfect fractions in, well, a fraction of the time. Read entire article

How to cycle through multiple files you wish to place in Adobe InDesign CS3

September 20th, 2007

I previously talked about InDesign’s hidden graphic replacement tool to replace existing graphics in a graphic frame. Today I have a new graphics placement tip for InDesign users to make placing more than one graphic a little easier.

When you load multiple graphics in InDesign CS3 (which you can do by holding the shift key down while selecting which files to place in the Place dialog box), all the graphics are “loaded” into the place cursor, but the order with which they are loaded may not be the order you wish to ...

InDesign’s hidden graphic replacement tool

September 17th, 2007

One of the highly publicized features of InDesign CS3 is the ability to “load” more than on graphic when you use the Place command, showing you a small preview of each graphic as you place them.

While the ability to place in a graphic frame our outside one is nothing new, you can hold down the Option key and click on a graphic frame which already contains a graphic and it will be replaced with the new graphic you currently have loaded to place.

Use Illustrator CS3’s Document Profiles to save time

September 6th, 2007

In the past, Illustrator had a startup file (one for CMYK and one for RGB) which was stored in the Plugins folder. Any changes made to these startup files were included in every new file that was created in Illustrator. However, with Illustrator CS3, the concept of Startup files has been replaced with something new (and much better) – New Document Profiles.

Mordy Golding has a great intro to Document Profiles over at Real World Illustrator to get you acquainted with using them.

Create a new layer BELOW the current one in InDesign

August 18th, 2007

Many times when you’re working with multiple-layered documents in Adobe InDesign (you did know there are layers in InDesign, right?) you find yourself creating a layer and immediately moving it beneath the current layer you’re working on. It’s tedious work constantly moving the newly created layer down in the list of the Layers panel.

You can easily create a new layer and have it appear BELOW the currently active layer by holding the Command + Option keys down while you click the New Layer button in the Layers panel.

This tip works in CS2 and CS3, by the way.
